[8:30 Data]  The Empire State factory survey remained soft, but the details of the September report were slightly less weak than the August data.  Non-fuel import prices and non-ag export prices were both firmer in August than anticipated.

[9:15 Data]  Downward revisions to July made this morning's industrial production report weaker than the headline number for August suggested. more »

Economic Indicators

The factory sector will be the dominant theme in this morning’s economic indicators.  The industrial production report for August and the Empire State manufacturing survey for September are both due out this morning, and both are likely to be moderate at best.  Today’s schedule also includes the import/export price report for August. more »

The Money Market Observer

Monday, Sep 13 The TIPS market got a lift at the end of the week from reports that the major benchmark indexes might be expanded to include inflation-indexed bonds.  The prospects for the inclusion of TIPS are uncertain, as is the likely timeframe for any such change.  If TIPS are eventually added to the index, it is likely that the index managers would take care to minimize any disruptions for index end-users in making the transition.  At the margin, the inclusion of real return bonds in the major indexes might make the Treasury even more ambitious in its planned expansion of 5-year TIPS issuance in 2011.  more »
