Intraday Updates

The durable goods orders report was significantly softer than we expected.  Some of the shortfall in the headline number was due to the volatile aircraft component, but the more important core capital goods data were also disappointing. more »

Economic Indicators

The advance report on durable good orders for June is due out at 8:30 this morning, and the beige book for the August FOMC meeting will be released at 2:00.  The durables report is likely to be upbeat, while the tone of the beige book is likely to be softer than the last edition. more »

Treasury Finance

The Treasury will roll over its routine $25 billion SFP bill this morning at 11:30 and will sell $37 billion of new 5-year notes today at 1:00. more »

Monday, Jul 26 The Treasury will hold its quarterly financing meetings with dealers this week in preparation for the August refunding.  The government’s borrowing outlook is extraordinarily uncertain at present for a variety of reasons, ranging from soft-patch concerns about the economy to the fact that nobody has a clue what the tax code will look like on January 1.  The possible termination of the Supplementary Financing Program early next year is an additional complication, as the debt managers would like to ensure that the financial system has access to an adequate supply of Treasury bills. more »
