The Money Market Observer

Monday, Mar 8 The overnight fed funds rate was unexpectedly firm last week.  Higher repo rates were the main driver, but were not the only factor at work.  We expect repo rates to soften at least slightly this week, which would help pull overnight funds down somewhat as well.  However, the altered balance in the Treasury collateral market is likely to put more upward pressure on overnight rates in the months ahead than we had anticipated. more »

Economic Indicators

This week's economic calendar is relatively light. International trade on Thursday and retail sales on Friday are the only major monthly reports due out of Washington . Private sector indicators due out this week include the quarterly Manpower hiring survey and the monthly NFIB small business index tomorrow and the Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment report on Friday. No major indicators are due out today. more »

Treasury Finance

The bill sector faces a heavy auction calendar over the next few days. Starting with today's 3- and 6-month bills, the Treasury will sell five different bill maturities totaling an estimated $136 billion, raising $27 billion in new cash. more »
